Our Scent | Inclusive | Exclusive

I met this woman years ago and she was wearing a really nice scent so I asked her what it was; she replied that it was an essential oil blend. Further inquiry yielded it was her 'own blend', and it was 'private'. Pft, well then. She was weird anyway - and had a haunted basement.

Remember what happened to Jean-Baptiste Grenouille - the protagonist of Patrick Suskind's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer? If you haven't read the book just go to the library and read the last chapter - (I call that technique, How to be Successful in Earning Your History Degree. For shame!).

Anyway, as you know, I'm a huge fan of Le Labo so the appropriate first stop for me on a recent trip to Los Angeles was 8385 West 3rd. I tell you, the last time I had been that excited was in 1978 at the Flintsones Amusement Park.  I was greeted by two gorgeous gals who thought my Vancouver accent was 'cute' (?). My mission was to get a bottle of Musc 25, the LA exclusive scent - which you can only buy online once a year. Well, for Ms. ADHD here, the store was just too much! Thankfully, I was reminded that I'd only traveled with carry on luggage and therefore couldn't bring any liquid over 3 ounces with us on the plane. I opted for the Musc 25 perfume oil and a handful of samples for loved ones. It took everything to hold me back from also buying the Oud 27, Patchouli 24 and Santal 33. Oh well, they have free shipping so there's always online.

Now that I'm back home, (and venturing out into society), people are asking me what scent I'm wearing. Usually, I wear amber resin, or essential oils of cedar and patchouli - which are pretty hard to carry off and folks don't have the wherewithal to scope them out. Where am I going with this post? Where do you think?

So, let's all smell the same - to save ourselves from the fate of Grenouille! It's City Exclusive time online at Le Labo again!

Going to California

Now, if it was only as easy as putting love in my eyes and flowers in my hair. Next week I'm headed to Huntington Beach, the last time I was in Huntington Beach I was 14. This Canadian, loves the sun but does not do well in the heat. I puff up like a puffer blow fish, don't like wearing skimpy clothes, and as a wonderful woman in NYC said to me, 'Girl, you are the whitest woman I've ever seen'.

Braless in a kaftan, that's it! I own a plethora of those! Alas, if only I were going to a fashion conference and not a technology leadership conference.

Yes, you've assumed correctly, that's me and my atv in the olden days at Pismo Beach Dunes before three wheelers were banned!

Rustic Camper Van Conversions

The other day it dawned on me why I prefer vernacular homes with cedar siding - Little House on the Prairie. Right!

Could it be that Bill and Beck Goddard do as well? The Goddard's family-run business, Rustic Campers, is a bespoke camper van conversion company that sources local materials to convert your van, motor home, or even Mercedes cargo into your own Little House on the Road.

Living in that 'van down by the river' is becoming more appealing, is it not?

I'm away

Starting today I'm on vacation for four weeks! I'm headed to the spa in Whistler for the weekend - that's my only plan. What happens next will be spur of the moment as plans give me anxiety. I've started up a Tumblr page to chronicle my vacation.

Nothing is up yet but book mark it if you want as I'll be sporadically posting vacation pics - and pics only  ->  stacylavaway.com

I'll still be posting on BL and on the BL fb page so please let me know you exist.

ps I deleted my Twitter account.

Tip of the Week - Highway Etiquette

When a motorist leaves a foot of snow on top of their vehicle and they travel at approximately 100 km/h, aforementioned snow will propel off the vehicle at approximately 100 km/h (pardon my physics) most likely hitting the rather unfortunate motorist - in this case me - behind them. Please remove snow from your vehicle before you hit the road. Thanks.

Palm Springs Modern aka Desert Modern

Maybe they've built it as a future back packers hostel in the desert? I don't know, I haven't read the article but Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's "retreat" is 25,000 square feet - see Septermber's Architectural Digest. Please help me understand why?

If you follow Bijou Living on Facebook you have seen some vacation shots from our trip to Palm Springs, as well as the 1700 square foot home we rented. For us, it was the perfect size - even if 15 of them could fit in the Pinkett Smith "retreat".

Here are a few little modernist diddies from PS.

Stay tuned for some little modernist diddies from West Vancouver.

Tip of the Week - Looking Your Best While Traveling

1. Neatness
2. Appropriateness

You may only be travelling with two or three outfits, but if you choose wrinkle-resistant materials, unpack your clothes when you arrive, keep them clean (carry a spot remover), and press them, you will always appear well dressed—no matter how much the cost of your outfit.

Which fabric travels best?

Imitators vs Innovators

New York Skyline c. 1935

I've been thinking about Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York today. Originally, I was trying to figure out if I could take the time off work to go. Then I started wondering if I'd really want to go. You see, in my eyes once it hits the runway it's already done. Is fashion week simply a mecca for the imitators? So be it - it's the tastemakers I'm interested in. If I can make it work I'll be in NYC this October for what I consider the premier fashion weekend. Keep your fingers crossed for me - it'll be my birthday treat to myself.

Bijou Living Goes To Palm Springs

Whatever your preconceived notions of Palm Springs are they may be put aside.
The Coachella Valley city, that was once Golden Age Hollywood’s cottage community for the stars, is reinterpreting itself, very quietly, as a destination for culture, mid-century architecture, art and of course, extremely laid back recreation (a 2003 Condé Nast Traveler edition named Palm Springs one of the top ten global vacation destinations). Sure, there are some kitschy bits geared at a particular tourist set but go with an open mind, participate, have a laugh and open up.

The recession has hit Palm Springs particularly hard. Many modernist homes are for sale at rock bottom prices, hotel room rates can be below advertised and store fronts are vacant. However, with the opening of the hyper cool Ace Hotel, the counter culture community of Joshua Tree only 32 miles northeast and Indio’s annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival growing in popularity, Palm Springs is going to see a new set of inhabitants who are not going to be just passing through.
