From the Archives - How to Make an Industrial Chic Table

Originally published February 11, 2009

old garage door converted into coffee table

You won't hesitate showing your guests to the door when it's your table. An old solid door, whether industrial or rustic, can be converted into a table quite simply.

  • old door - demolition sales are a great place for inexpensive oddities
  • screwdriver
  • drill
  • saw
  • eight double wide corner braces
  • four wooden cable spools for legs - pick these up from the phone or hydro company
  • four rubber 'feet' for each spool
  • paint for the cable spool optional
  • sheet of polished glass for top optional

  1. Remove any hinges or hardware from door if desired
  2. Plan and measure desired height of legs
  3. Place tabletop section face down and mark the placement of the legs
  4. If using a large door like the one above, use a cable spool in each corner. You'll need to saw the spool down to the desired height.
  5. Paint spool if desired
  6. Glue rubber 'feet' to bottom of each spool to steady it if necessary
  7. Place spools/legs on top of door
  8. Place two double wide corner braces next to each leg on either side
  9. Predrill holes for the screws, secure braces with screws

Someone Stole My Bike

I think this is the only picture I have of my bike - Jericho Beach circa 1999

It was a vintage orange all steel Raleigh women's bike with an image of a mountain by the logo. I bought it at the SPCA thrift store on West Broadway for $30. It had chrome fenders, white hand grips, a broken blue with white edge saddle seat, busted brakes, broken gears, there was one of those clear plastic red combination locks on it and it was extremely squeeky. I'd also replaced the tires with wheel chair tires. The loser stole it right from our West End apartment building's bike lock up so it was obviously someone who lived there. I think it was the Raver that lived on our floor because as soon as he moved out my bike was gone. This was ten years ago. I haven't stopped looking for my bike. I've thought I've spotted it a few times but no dice. What I'm going to do if I do find it. I will wait beside the bike until the person comes for it, that's what I'll do.

How to Make a Salmon Wrap

Tacones are the new wraps. I know, I know...

What you need:

Dill-Mint Yogurt
1/4 chopped fresh dill
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
1 cup plain gelatin free yogurt (Liberté or Olympic)
3 tbsp no fat mayo
2 limes, juiced

Your choice of filling. We used 1/2 lb oven baked salmon
2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil or grape seed oil
salt and pepper to taste
lemon juice
1 pkg whole grain tortillas, Persian flat bread or pita bread cut into triangles
1 cup fresh pea shoots
1/2 cup radish cut into matchstick pieces
1/4 cup dill-mint yogurt
baking sheet

What you do:

1. Whisk all the ingredients for the dill-mint yogurt together. Left overs can be refrigerated for 3-4 days and used for veggie or chip dip.
2. Rub oil over salmon and season with salt, pepper, lemon juice and a little dill. Place salmon on tin foil and place on a baking sheet.
3. Bake salmon in a 375 oven for 15-20 minutes. The salmon should flake smoothly with a fork.
4. Place a blob of dill-mint yogurt, pea shoots, and radish on each piece of flatbread, tortilla or pita triangle.
5. Add cooked salmon.
6. Fold bottom of bread/tortilla up, hold down with your thumb while you make a cone out of it. To cheat you can stick a tooth pick in to keep it together just warn whomever you're feeding.

You are booking a room

If you had to choose a room at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, which would it be, 2011 or 1977?

In my current mood, I prefer the 'candlelit, subtly perfumed with incense, exotic, romantic...' suite from 1977.

The Beverly Wilshire was owned by a group of private investors, headed up by bon vivant Hernando Courtright from 1961-1985. It was then sold for $125 million to its current owner Regent International Hotels. The hotel is managed by the Four Seasons.
